We are looking for an experienced Skilled Road Worker to join our surfacing and civil engineering team. The successful candidate will support the delivery of road, footway, car park, public realm and general civil engineering works to a high standard of safety, quality and productivity.
The role will involve working as part of a surfacing gang carrying out preparation, hand-lay works, machine-lay support, kerbing, drainage, reinstatement, excavation, compaction and general road construction duties.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Skilled Road Worker will be expected to:
- Carry out road and footway construction works, including excavation, preparation, laying, regulating and reinstatement.
- Assist with machine-lay and hand-lay surfacing operations.
- Prepare areas for asphalt, including sweeping, trimming, regulating and applying bond coat where required.
- Lay and rake asphalt materials to line, level and tolerance.
- Assist with compaction using rollers, wacker plates and other small plant where competent.
- Carry out kerbing, edging, ironwork adjustments, drainage works and general civils duties.
- Set up and maintain safe working areas in line with site requirements and traffic management arrangements.
- Follow drawings, levels, site instructions and method statements.
- Use hand tools and small plant safely and correctly.
- Maintain good housekeeping on site and ensure working areas are kept clean and safe.
- Work closely with the foreman, paver driver, roller drivers and other operatives to achieve programme targets.
- Report defects, safety issues, near misses or plant problems to the supervisor immediately.
- Complete daily site paperwork, plant checks or digital records where required.
- Work in accordance with company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures.
Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate should have:
- Previous experience in road surfacing, highways, civils, utilities reinstatement or groundworks.
- Good knowledge of asphalt laying, road construction and reinstatement works.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced site environment.
- Experience using hand tools, small plant and compaction equipment.
- Understanding of site safety, manual handling and working around plant.
- Ability to follow instructions, drawings and site procedures.
- A strong work ethic and willingness to work overtime, weekends or nightshift when required.
Tickets / Qualifications Desirable
- CSCS / NPORS / CPCS card.
- Streetworks ticket.
- Dumper / roller / excavator ticket.
- CAT & Genny training.
- Manual handling.
- Abrasive wheels.
- First aid.
- Driving licence preferred.

Working Conditions
This role will involve outdoor working in all weather conditions and may include early starts, nightshift, weekend work and travel to different sites depending on project requirements.
