Building Leaders at Luddon – John Sinclair

In august 2008, I started as a ground worker with Luddon Construction after spending 7 years in the house building industry, where I had learned many aspects of groundworks and setting out, such as using an optical surveying instrument (Dumpy) and setting up rotating and pipe lasers.

Back then, my ganger Stephen Glen and I started with Luddon on a new school project called St Athanasius Primary School where we carried out various tasks including kerbing, concerting and drainage.

I worked alongside Stephen, and when he moved onto being a foreman, I took on the role of Ganger where I looked after a squad. During this time, I picked up many competency tickets along the way through Luddon’s own Training Centre including my SSSTS and 360 operator training.

And that was the start of my progression, after a few years as a Ganger I became a Working Foreman then, Foreman again picking up more tickets including my SMSTS and doing an external course to gain my CSCS Black Card.

I was given the opportunity to take on more of an assistant site management role at Topgolf, where I worked alongside the internal site manager doing the fit-out works. By assisting the site manager this really helped, as it then led to my first role as the Site Manager for Oregon Timber in Selkirk.

I have worked with a lot of great managers and leaders throughout the years, but special thanks go out to Jordan Keatings, Robert Love and Anthony McLaughlin. All pushed me and supported me throughout the years as they saw my desire to keep trying to progress as a leader within the company. There are of course many others who have helped to keep me motivated when I have been maybe needing that little bit of a push.

I have really benefited from the training and support throughout the years, and I hope my career path shows what you can achieve within Luddon.
