Completion of Marks and Spencer Project at Gallagher Retail Park, Dundee

Luddon Construction has successfully completed a significant project at the Gallagher Retail Park in Dundee, transforming an existing retail space into a new Marks & Spencer (M&S) store. The project was undertaken on behalf of the British Steel Pension Fund Trustees Ltd and marks another milestone in Luddon’s extensive portfolio of retail construction projects.

The works involved the conversion of Units 4 and 5 at Gallagher Retail Park into a modern M&S outlet. The complex nature of the work required a phased approach to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality.

Phase 1 included the complete strip-out of all internal finishes, the removal of existing concrete floors, and even the demolition of a swimming pool. This phase also involved the removal of the separating party wall between the units to create a larger, unified space for the new store.

Phase 2 saw significant structural alterations, including the modification of the steel framework, the construction of new foundations and the installation of lift pits and staircases to accommodate the new store layout. The exterior received a comprehensive upgrade, with new entrances, glazed rainscreens and cladding that align with M&S’s contemporary retail aesthetics

Additionally, extensive work was carried out to improve the roof, remove and retain some of the existing services, integrate ventilation systems and update the hardstanding and car parking areas.

Luddon Construction worked closely with a team of specialist consultants to overcome the challenges presented by the project. Key collaborators included Quattro Consult Limited as Structural Engineer, Smith Design Associates as Architect, and KJ Tait Engineers as M&E Consultant.

The completion of the new M&S unit at Gallagher Retail Park is a testament to Luddon Construction’s expertise in delivering high-quality retail spaces.
