Luddon Construction is proud to announce the successful completion of the major upgrade works at the Swallow Roundabout in Dundee, delivered on behalf of our valued client, Springfield Properties. This essential infrastructure improvement supports the wider development of the surrounding area, enhancing connectivity, safety and capacity for all road users.
Our scope of works involved:
• Full reconfiguration of the roundabout and its approaches, including road widening, new filter lanes, and upgraded junction layouts.
• Extensive traffic signalisation to improve safety and traffic flow.
• Site clearance, drainage, and complex service diversions, including SGN medium-pressure gas, SSE high-voltage electricity, and Scottish Water sewer diversions.
• Installation of new street lighting, vehicle restraint systems (VRS), traffic signage, barriers, fencing, and landscaping.
• Complete surfacing and road marking throughout the roundabout and its approaches.
The works were carried out in a live, heavily trafficked environment with the added complexity of working adjacent to the A90 trunk road and Dykes of Gray Road and Riverside Avenue side roads. Luddon adopted a 24-hour, dual-shift working pattern:
• Day Shift (07:00 – 19:00) for all off-road works.
• Night Shift (19:00 – 07:00) for all on-carriageway works under traffic management and contraflow systems.
Our teams successfully navigated the challenge of re-opening all roads by 7am daily, maintaining public access and safety without compromising on quality or programme.
Luddon is proud of the positive feedback received from the local community. One local resident commended the project: “I have been very impressed by the progress of the project – beyond expectation. The workforce cope admirably with drivers who ignore the 30mph limit towards the contraflow. It is fantastic that Luddon carries out work 24hrs Monday-Friday to the benefit of the road users, especially with the added burden of the houses being built at Dykes of Gray. So, hats off to all involved.”
We recognise the impact construction can have on local communities, and we are pleased to have maintained strong communication and a commitment to minimising disruption throughout.
This project stands as another example of Luddon’s ability to safely deliver complex civil engineering works in live environments, balancing programme, budget and community needs.
