Luddon Construction are committed to providing job opportunities for trainees and apprentices, ensuring ongoing professional development is always offered.
We recently caught up with Patrick and Alex, our Trainee Engineers within our Northern England Division.
Patrick Sweeney – Trainee Engineer
What course are you studying?
“I was 1 year into a full time BEng degree in civil engineering when I joined Luddon in June 2022. I then transferred onto part time in a degree apprenticeship scheme at Liverpool John Moore’s University.
My degree was supposed to last 3 years full time finishing in May 2024, whilst as a degree apprentice I am supposed to finish in May 2025 (an extra year).”
How have you found your experience studying and working with Luddon?
“Having completed both a full-time civil engineering degree and a part-time civil engineering degree, I undoubtedly endorse the part-time path. This choice stems from the invaluable practical knowledge and experience gained while actively involved on construction sites, which significantly enhances the understanding of classroom teachings in real-time.
Additionally, the financial support provided by Luddon Construction has made pursuing my degree an obvious decision, relieving any financial burdens associated with studying. My experience with the company has been remarkable, affording me the opportunity to visit various construction sites and acquire knowledge and understanding to practical construction techniques. Moreover, I have been provided plentiful opportunities and training programs to enhance my professional skill set.”
Alex Mulholland – Trainee Engineer
What course are you studying?
“I have just finished my second year of five for my civil engineering degree at Salford university. Studies so far have gone well and with coursework and examinations being completed. Currently working through my ICE IPD and CPD to allow for certification at the end of my apprenticeship.”
How have you found your experience studying and working with Luddon?
“Since joining Luddon, I have mostly been shadowing Luke Bamber and visiting all the different sites that are currently active in the North West. I have been on the Thornton BESS since the start of the work, completing tasks such as topographical surveys, volume surveys, setting out, monitoring works with a laser level and setting out profile boards.
In the short time being at Luddon, I have gained a lot of on-site experience and will now look into developing my knowledge on the quality side of it.”
Tom Jepson, Divisional Manager for Northern England said: “I am delighted that both Patrick Sweeney and Alex Mulholland are working with us at Luddon as Trainee Engineers in the Northern England Division. Its great to see them growing in experience and confidence as they develop as Engineers.
Patrick has been based between sites at Essar Oil and Vynova and from a very early stage you could see the potential Patrick has and can now see him putting it into practice as he is responsible for the works on his own site.
Alex recently joined us in 2024 and has straight away become a key member of the site team at our Battery Storage Project for H&MV in York. Alex has shown both the ability and enthusiasm that will give him every opportunity of success in his studies and work.
Both Patrick and Alex are working through there ICE Accreditations which are also being supported by Luddon with mentors being assigned to both Patrick and Alex.”
