Luddon Construction is proud to announce the completion of the new Bishopbriggs Crematorium, a modern, environmentally-friendly facility located on the north-eastern outskirts of Bishopbriggs, just off Crosshill Road.
The project, which involved significant civil engineering works and the construction of a bespoke building, included the creation of a new 3-arm compact roundabout, the realignment of 150m of Crosshill Road, and an advanced road drainage scheme incorporating Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). The construction team also introduced new bus stops on the western and southern arms of the roundabout, footways, pedestrian refuge modifications, uncontrolled pedestrian crossings, as well as road signage and kerb modifications to improve accessibility and safety for the local community.
The crematorium building itself comprises four distinct linked elements: the entrance, waiting room, public toilets, main chapel building, facility offices, and the cremator room. Luddon Construction’s expert team brought the vision to life with careful attention to detail, using a variety of materials to ensure both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The entrance building is constructed with load-bearing masonry, timber-joisted ceilings, and steel beam purlins with a traditional cut/pitched roof. The chapel features glulam purlins and trusses supported by steel columns, providing both strength and elegance.
A key feature of the crematorium is its advanced cremator room, constructed with a tied steel frame and wind girders at the roof level. The floor structure is primarily suspended, with precast concrete beam and block flooring across most of the building, while the cremator room and garden store utilise an in-situ reinforced concrete slab on permanent metal formwork.
The facility is designed with sustainability in mind, boasting a peaceful landscaped Garden of Remembrance with a tranquil water feature at the entrance. Inside, the chapel can accommodate 120 seated mourners, with additional standing room for larger gatherings. The latest technology, including high-resolution screens and an almost unlimited choice of music through Obitus, enhances the personalisation of each service, offering comfort and support to grieving families.
In addition to the chapel, the crematorium grounds include 80 parking spaces, including accessible spaces, overflow parking, and electric vehicle charging points. An ash-scattering area and the Garden of Remembrance offer visitors a place of reflection and peace.
Donnie Connor, the manager of Bishopbriggs Crematorium said, “I am proud to be the first manager of this exceptional crematorium, which is one of the most environmentally-friendly facilities in the UK.”
“We are using the very latest in cremator technology, which makes a significant difference towards offsetting our carbon footprint. We have also installed a zonal heating system and low-energy lighting. Now we are open, we can warmly welcome and serve people from the communities in and around the Greater Glasgow area and provide them with the exceptional care that the Westerleigh Group is renowned for.”
Luddon Construction’s involvement in this project highlights the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality construction solutions that meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve, while maintaining the highest standards of environmental responsibility.
With the completion of Bishopbriggs Crematorium, local families now have access to a state-of-the-art, tranquil environment in which to honour their loved ones. The facility is set to become a key part of the community for years to come.
