Luddon Construction has commenced works to carry out the Outer Space project for Glasgow Science Centre, which is part of the £4 million Connect programme.
The Connect: Outer Space project looks to covert the external areas around Glasgow Science Centre to become inspiring public spaces and improve connections between communities on both sides of the Clyde. It is also to encourage outdoor activity, promote physical and mental wellbeing, celebrate science and encourage more walking and cycling.
The works involve creating a ‘front garden’ which prioritises pedestrians and provides an outdoor science experience. The existing coach turning circle will be reduced to allow more space for pedestrians and cyclists to safely use this area.
The project also includes new green space and infrastructure, a network of external exhibits and learning points and a new segregated cycle path along Pacific Quay, with links to national routes.
Dr Gillian Lang, deputy director of science at Glasgow Science Centre said: “We’re so excited that this transformation is underway and can’t wait for visitors to come and explore the new space once it’s ready.
We’re creating safe, outdoor learning spaces with exciting hands-on exhibits and opportunities to connect with nature.
The aim is to create a community and civic outdoor space that is loved, social and interactive; connecting the science centre to the community, to the environment and to the city.”
Luddon Construction are due to complete the works by July 2021.
